I just returned from the national March for Life in Washington, D.C., marking the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the infamous decision that imposed abortion on demand on all 50 states in 1973.
You might be wondering why our team and so many others continue to march every January in light of the Dobbs v. Jackson decision that finally reversed Roe in June 2022.
My response is twofold…
First, we march in memorial to the more than 65 million children who lost their lives under the banner of so-called safe and legal “choice,” made possible by Roe v. Wade. This grave loss demands attention and remembrance, and the D.C. March is uniquely positioned to bring together tens of thousands of people — particularly young people — to send a strong message that these lives will not be forgotten.
Second, our work is not done. Abortion has not ended; the issue has instead been handed back to the people and their representatives. This march — which goes right through our nation’s capital — reminds Congress and our President that we remain committed to a national solution to the nationwide injustice of abortion. In the meantime, many states have voted to preserve or liberally expand local abortion laws — some even enshrining a “right” to abortion in their state constitutions. Yes, there are a handful of pro-life states, but we must work to keep them pro-life.
On top of these political battles, mail-order abortion drugs are flooding across state borders, regardless of local laws. The abortion industry is committed to keeping abortion easily accessible through all nine months of pregnancy in every state for any reason.
We simply cannot afford to step back or slow down … because the other side isn’t.
As in years past, the March for Life was a great chance to make connections and expand the audience of our mission to more people, particularly young people (like these two young men I met at the Students for Life Pro-Life Summit).
But that’s just the first step!
This coming June, on the anniversary of Dobbs, we will regroup in D.C. at the National Celebrate Life Weekend. During this weekend, national leaders and experts will inspire, educate, and mobilize hundreds of pro-life women and men (like you!) to make a difference in their own community.
